Bhavnagar, located in Saurashtra region, was founded in 1724 by Bhavsinhji Gohil. Bhavnagar is known as the cultural centre of the State of Gujarat. Literary achievers like Govardhan Tripathi, Kavi Kant, Narsinh Mehta and Ganga Sati have their roots in Bhavnagar. The nearest excursions are Piram bet and Velavadar Black Buck National Park, two natural heritage sites.
One of the primary attractions of the city is the Water Lock Gate at Bhavnagar port. The gate, about 100 years old, was built with the intention of maintaining sea-water level in the docks that would keep ships floating even at low tides.
